Cacao Safety
As a superfood packed with plant-based iron, flavonoids, magnesium, calcium, phytonutrients and powerful antioxidants, ceremonial cacao has many documented health benefits. It’s a great source of monounsaturated fat, cholesterol-free saturated fat, vitamins, minerals, fibre, natural carbohydrates and protein. However, it’s important to note that as with any ingredient, consuming excessive amounts beyond the recommended amounts can have adverse affects. Research suggests that eating 50-100g of raw cacao daily, has been associated with sweating, trembling and headaches.
At Smile Cacao we recommend a serving size of 25g. A traditional serving size of ceremonial cacao is considered to be 42g, however due to the rich, intensity and depth of Smile Cacao, a smaller proportion of cacao paste is required. Cacao Contraindications
For anyone with serious heart conditions, pregnant and breastfeeding mamas and anyone taking antidepressants (particularly MAOI based anti-depressants) are advised to speak with their health care provider prior to consuming ceremonial cacao. Important safety note for dogs regarding Theobromine
Whilst cacao is easily metabolised by humans, the Theobromine compound is the element of cacao (and caffeine and chocolate) that makes it unsafe and toxic to dogs so, just like all chocolate, it is important to keep your cacao away from your 4 legged friends.
